Intro ResignationReturn to index of stories... |
But first: should Diocese of Manchester Bishop John McCormack resign? That's what some people are calling for in the wake of the church's handling of the sexual abuse crisis in the Catholic Church. In Wednesday's Union Leader - the paper repriesed a call for the Bishop's resignation - the editorial decribed the bishop as some one who "stubbornly clings to to his office like a petulant child being pried from a favorite toy." The last time the Bishop publically addressed calls for his resignation was in February. This is some of what he had to say. |
ResignationReturn to index of stories... |
My most challenging and difficult ministry as preist and bisop had been around the area of sexual abuse of minors by preists. What I have experienced in the past to be difficult and painful is more so now as I have come to understand and acknowledge all I have done and failed to do to protect young children and to protect young people in the church. I understand that there has been some speculation about what I called you together for tonight. Some are expecting an announcement and I have one to make. I am here to lead the church in New Hampshire as your shepard. I want to lead the church in New Hampshire and I intend to do so with every fiber of my being. I want to do this with you and for you. I am not deaf to those who have called me to leave. But I do not see my doing so as consistent with who we are as a church. Or who I am in being a faithful disciple of the lord. As much as I feel compelled to serve you it is my prayer that you as members of the church feel compelled to serve and lead with me. |

Are you just a few individuals - are you stuck not ready to move forward? What took you so long? Let's focus on the deposition that was released yesterday. That deposition was from Sister Catherine Mulkerrin What did it say? Prior to the release of information gathered by the New Hampshire Attorney Generals office - the Bishop spoke about the sexual abuse scandal in he church and his plans. Why can't he "start fresh"? Do you think you have the momentum? How did you ask for bishops resignation? What about the issue of approaching church goers to give them information ? Father Arsenault in an email; to priests said that should not be allowed on church property. You've also asked for Auxilliary Bishop Christian's resignation - why? Editorial: No trespassing Monitor editorial New Hampshire Catholics for Moral Leadership have also asked for Bishop to step down any coordinated efforts by two groups? Any communication with Vatican? |

If you were watching television at all today, you saw the images from the streets of Baghdad. They were the pictures of Liberation Day. Iraqis took to the streets, and brought down an enormous statue of Saddam Hussein, and otherwise celebrated the end of his regime. But in that same city, and in pockets all over the country, fierce battles were being waged and looters stormed hotels and homes. The Bush Administration is calling the day symbolic, but urges caution. The war, they say is not over. |

Terri at 18:50 Ray and I are both registered democrats, we've been registered democrats for ever, and we are both behind the administration and what President Bush is doing. Ray 47:48 It's a little nerve racking because you never know what can happen but I feel as though we need to be there. Those are not statements that Ray and Terri Guay of Gorham make lightly. Two of their four children are currently serving in the military: Daughters Megan Biondo and Veronica Clark. Terri at 3:18 To be perfectly honest when we first found out that war was inevitable, I was angry, I was very angry. And then I called the girls and was really upset and they were so calm, Our rolls just reversed and they said this is what we signed up to do. This is what we have to do. Even if it means leaving their children. Terri at 1:45 Sydney is Megan and Franks daughter, she's two and half, bless her heart. We have Sydney's plan. Gauy's son-on law Frank, a specialist in the Army, is already in Iraq. Her daughter, Megan is currently stationed at Fort Lee in Virginia. If Megan were to be deployed I could get a call from her commanding officer saying come get Sydney now and then we'd get down their as soon as possible. Guay's other daughter Veronica and her husband Cody are both marines currently stationed at Camp Lejeune. Guay said that Cody recently received notification that he too, may soon be deployed. Terri at 38:32 They have two young children Sabrina just turned two yesterday and logan was born in December. Although it is difficult to see her family split apart, Guay is proud of what her children doing. Terri at 6:13 When 911 hit, Frank and Megan e-mailed, they had a huge e-mail that they sent out to everybody, because they were both on alert, you have to know we may be going. We may be deployed and understand that this is what we want to do to make this world a safer place for Sydney and their son, Anthony. Knowing the sacrifice that her children are making for the war effort, Guay says she has little patience with the protestors. Terri at 20:11 We went through concord a few weeks ago and there was protesting there. I just get very upset because my kids are putting their lives on the line Jump cut to 20:52 Frank was really worried before he went over, he said what if we're called baby killers just like in the Viet nam conflict. I don't think this is what these troops need to see. I mean we have a great deal of young men and women over there and they don't need this. They need the country supporting them. As Terri and Ray work at their business, Sun World Printing in Gorham, the worries that go with knowing loved ones are fighting a war are never far from their thoughts and prayers. Guay says her fondest hope is that it is over soon. Terri at 16:54 that all the young people, all the military come home very safe and happy and just no nuclear weapons, just a peaceful resolution. And I worry about the Iraqi people too what they are going through its horrible. But, I have a candle in the window, ribbons on the doors and they don't come down until everyone comes home. From Gorham, I'm Theresa Kennett for NH Outlook |
